A Book Launch with readings by Gerda Stevenson from ‘Quines”.

Christian Small lived and painted in the Scottish Borders village of West Linton for over sixty years.  Until now, her work has been virtually unknown beyond her local community.  Her work was of a remarkable quality and range, in many different media.  Her choice of subjects was wonderfully imaginative.  Woven in and out of the paintings are poems by Gerda Stevenson, and Christian’s thoughts in prose as imagined with poignant elequence by her daughter, Jenny Alldridge.  2018 marks the centenary of British women gaining the vote for the firtst time, and also the end of the First World War.  This book tells a very personal narrative which reverberates powerfully with these events – a story of family, the legacy of war, women’s place in society, motherhood, community and, above all, one woman’s extraordinary artistry.
